Southland Renal Medical Group offers high-quality care for those who are experiencing kidney problems or renal disease, and our physicians are both experienced and knowledgeable. Our facility was founded by two doctors who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for patients in Long Beach and the surrounding Southern California area. Ronald A. Fischman, MD, FACP, FASN
Ronald A. Fischman, MD, is originally from New York and received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Columbia University. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, in 1974. He completed his Nephrology training at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1979.
After completing his nephrology training, Dr. Fischman moved to Southern California and has since provided leadership in the nephrology and dialysis communities. His early roles included hemodialysis directorships in both inpatient and outpatient programs, and serving on the clinical faculty at Harbor UCLA. In addition to becoming board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology, he has been elected to fellowship in both the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Fischman is established as a proven leader in all aspects of healthcare services. His broad experience at all levels of the health care spectrum reflects his long-standing intense interest and commitment to the wellbeing of the communities in which he practices.
He has served on many committees dating back to 1980.
He has served as chief of staff and served on the governing board of Lakewood Regional Medical Center. He has also served as chairman and member of a variety of committees at numerous hospitals and hospital systems, including the Memorial Care Health System and the PIH-Downey, and is currently serving as a senior medical director at multiple local dialysis facilities for both DaVita Healthcare Partners and Fresenius Medical Care. In addition, he founded several independent physician organizations and serves as a consultant and advisor to numerous medical groups in Southern California.
Dr. Fischman has formulated our quality assessment program with an emphasis on quality of care, comprehensive services, patient education, quality of life, and patient satisfaction. His aim is to create the best nephrology group practice in Southern California.
In his free time, Dr. Fischman enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and playing golf.
Avedik Semerjian, MD, FACP, FASN
Dr. Avedik Semerjian earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1982 at Damascus University School of Medicine in Syria. Having moved to the United States in 1983, he completed his internal medicine residency at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn, NY, in 1987. He completed his nephrology fellowship in 1989 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and soon afterward moved to Southern California.
Dr. Semerjian started working with Dr. Ronald Fischman in 1989, and in 1999 he became a partner in cofounding Southland Renal Medical Group. Since then, Dr. Semerjian has developed many of our CKD programs, overseeing the implementation of various clinical pathways and the establishment of proper disease management protocols. Dr. Semerjian has served and continues serving in different capacities in various medical committees at the local hospitals, and he continues working as a medical director of local dialysis units.
Dr. Semerjian is very interested in creating plans catering the condition of each individual patient, throughout the various stages of Chronic Kidney Disease. His focus is on implementing evidence bases, patient-centered, disease management protocols, in an attempt to halt of slow down the progression of Chronic Kidney disease.
Dr. Semerjian is intimately involved in the management of his patients with End Stage Renal Disease. With his close interaction with the dialysis RNs, Dietitians and Social Workers, he has been very successful in improving longevity and quality of life of his patients requiring various modalities in Renal Replacement Therapies.
In his spare time, Dr. Semerjian likes to spend time with his family. He also enjoys listening to classic and Latin Jazz music, traveling and running. He is fluent in English, Armenian, Arabic and in conversational Spanish.
Bikram Singh Sekhon, MD
Dr. Bikram Singh Sekhon is originally from India. He earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Manipal University, India in 2009. He subsequently moved to the United States and completed residency in Internal Medicine from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York in 2014. Soon after, he moved to Southern California to pursue his interest in nephrology and completed nephrology fellowship from University of California Los Angeles in 2017.
Dr. Sekhon began working with Southland Renal Medical Group after completing fellowship in 2017. Dr. Sekhon is particularly interested in treating patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, End Stage Renal Disease, Hypertension and managing patients post kidney transplant.
In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, watching sports and spending time with family. Dr. Sekhon is
multi-lingual speaking English, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.
Michael A. Fischman, MD
Michael A. Fischman, MD grew up in Los Angeles and moved to the east coast for his undergraduate education at Babson College in Boston. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed his initial training in Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. He then moved to Boston to train in Nephrology at the Harvard Medical School joint fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Fischman’s interests are in improving the delivery and quality of care to Chronic Kidney Disease and End Stage Renal Disease patients. He is particularly interested in the application of patient-centered value-based healthcare to patients with kidney diseases.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, running, cycling and traveling with friends.
Ericson Reyes, NP, MSN
Ericson Reyes, NP, MSN joined our team in April 2006. He has 11 years of experience working with patients who have end stage renal disease (ESRD). He assists the physicians by providing follow-up care and coordinating each patient’s care plan. He functions in this role by performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, prescribing some of the specific medications required by chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients (when authorized by the physicians), and continuously recognizing that patient education is central in managing this population.
Trisha Luu, Physician Assistant
Trisha Luu is a nationally certified Physician Assistant specializing in nephrology and dialysis. She completed her Bachelor in Biology degree at The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She then went on to complete her Masters in Health Sciences and Physician Assistant Degree at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Ms. Luu is certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
Melissa Hawk, Physician Assistant
Melissa Hawks is originally from San Diego and received her undergraduate degree in Physiology from UC Santa Barbara. She went on to receive her Master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies at Samuel Merritt University in the Bay Area.
Upon receiving her PA credentialing, Melissa joined a Nephrology practice in northern California in 2004. She specialized in the care of dialysis patients and treating all stages of chronic kidney disease. She remained part of that practice until 2017, when she decided to move back to southern California and join Southland Renal Medical Group.
Melissa continues to specialize in care for patients with End Stage Renal Disease. She is an advocate for extensive patient education and supports patients playing an active role in their healthcare.
In her spare time she enjoys traveling, swimming, scuba diving and snowboarding.
